WVU’s recruiting class consists of 19

February 3, 2010

The Mountaineers received national letters-of-intent from 19 prospective student-athletes Wednesday.

Among the eye-opening signees, quarterbacks Barry Brunetti and Jeremy Johnson remained committed and both could have a chance at immediate playing time.

Wide receiver was a point of emphasis for the WVU staff, and the Mountaineers got a good one in Miramar, Fla., native Ivan McCartney. McCartney is a highly regarded receiver and the cousin of Cincinnati Bengals pro bowl wideout Chad Johnson. Miami and Florida each made late pushes in an attempt to lure McCartney away, but both were unsuccessful. WVU signed McCartney along with three other receivers.

WVU also focused on areas of need and signed three safeties and linebackers. The Mountaineers lost safeties Nate Sowers and Boogie Allen off this year’s team and will lose linebackers J.T. Thomas, Pat Lazear and Anthony Leonard after next year.
